Hello everyone
This is my first message to a forum as I am a recently joined member.
My query concerns a problem with the clutch I suspect. Although the vehicle is less than 6 months old, I have been aware of a noise at the front of the car from when it was really quite new. This noise could be described as a squeal or screech from the front-end when pulling away in reverse against a resistance.

I recorded the noise which, in my estimation, has been developing and worsening over the period I have had the car and in fact the noise now also occurs in 1st gear at slow speeds.

At about 1700 miles, I returned the car to my Dealer and left the vehicle overnight. The Service Department has reported that the problem is the clutch and that there is a modification to be made and parts are awaited.

I am extremely concerned about this and would be interested to hear from anyone else who has experienced similar problems. What is the real cause
and what is the solution to the problem? Does anyone know if MG Rover is aware of the problem or if a Bulletin has been issued?

Thank you for your attention
Tom.

Hi All
Is there anyone who can advise me on this clutch problem? Perhaps Mick or Marky if they are available?
All advice gratefully accepted!
Tom.

Hi Tom,

I know that our member 'scotty' has the same problem. He got his new 75 in January this year. His dealer has no idea how to find the cause.

the noise that you descibe sounds like the clutch release bearing it may not have had the correct amount of lubricant put in it when made, then again it could also be the friction plate (glazed)this could happen if you was a bit heavy on the clutch from new, does it make the noise as you release the clutch to drive off? or when you just dip the clutch up and down in neutral,if it makes the noise only when taking up drive to pull away then its the friction plate,if this is the case you could try slipping the clutch in third gear to burn it off using high engine revs BUT only do this if you are sure you know what you are doing if not ask a friendly mechanic to do it for you (like me if i was close to you)all that said its under warranty anyway so you could always give it to rover

Hello Fritz and Mick
Thank you for your advice. I think a visit to my Dealer may be the correct course of action as you suggest Mick. Yes it is a pity that we do not stay closer!
Thank you again

hi Rosebank,

this morning I was in my workshop. Here the result:

This is a really a clutch problem. It exists a bulletin from Rover to their
partners. If there is this noise like I have, then must be change the clutch.
The reason are the torque-springs from the clutch, I think.

The new one is ordered now.

Hope, that I could help you.

best regards

scotty

Hi Scotty
Thank you for your previous advice. I have visited my Service Dealer and after checking the problem they now confirm exactly what you told to me. The clutch plate has to be replaced with one with pressure springs. I have a copy of the official MG Rover Group TECHNICAL BULLETIN detailing the problem, although they state that action is only to be taken on customer complaint. The number of the Bulletin is TBO120 Issue 1, dated 31.03.2004, Section: Clutch. The new centre plate will have damper springs.
The plate for my has been ordered for 27 July 2004 I hope.
I hope this information may help other members.
Thank you once again, Scotty.
Regards
Rosebank
