Nonstarting 75 CDT - any good ideas?

This is now the second time the same problem occurs - first time was this winter at minus 25 Centigrade but problem solved itself after two days.

Yesterday it was at least PLUS 25 centigrade - temperature is not the reason!

Symptoms:
With the key turned to starting position starter does not cut in. Instead every system in the car cuts out for half a second and then comes back on again. If key is kept in starting postion the whole thing repeats approximately once a second. It gives the impression that the starting current is so high that voltage falls below a critical limit making the starter solenoid to drop the connection, which might explain the repetition. But this just my theory.

So - what have I checked?
*Battery charge and capacity has been checked at a workshop = 100% OK.
*Positive batterycables to starter and alternator are not loose.
*Neg cable is earthed to chassis and engine.
*Bolts holding starter to engine are not loose.
*Stater inhibitor seems OK - same result with both keys.

Anybody out there with good ideas? I am very grateful for everything that might make me mobile again (of course my Rover 3500 SD1 is also temporary "at rest" undergoing front suspension repairs - but my bicycle is fully operative).

Hi Rulle

I believe it only can be the battery.Ok you have let it check up and it was ok but if the battery has the slightest default which cannot be diagnosted by a current checkup ,then.... this problem occurs,if you can find a dealer or a service station who will replace the old one for a new one just to have a look if the new one will be in order to resolve the nonstarting problem so you will surely be again on the bright side of life.

It was not the battery, even if I agree - everything points to battery problems.

The problem has solved itself (just like last time)! How?
Just by disconnecting the battery for a longer period (in this case approximately 10 hours, last time probably more).

My Rover Workshop and myself has the same opinion - it seems to be an electronical problem (however very unlikely) and we have directed it to the swedish Rover-importer. When I get any comments / solutions from them I will inform this forum.

So - Rulle is back on the road again - life is great!
